Gender in Spanish

Spanish nouns are either masculine or feminine.  You can identify a noun’s gender by looking at the ending:

Masculine and Feminine noun endings:

Masculine

-o

Feminine

-a, -ción, -sión, -dad

*there are certain words that don’t follow the above rules, luckily, beginners only need to remember a few:

  • Mapa (map) is masculine
  • Pantalón (pants) is masculine
  • Autobus (bus) is masculine
  • Clase (class) is feminine
  • Coche (car) is masculine
  • Moto (motorcycle) is feminine
  • Drama is masculine
  • Planeta (planet) is masculine
  • Noche (night) is feminine
